Michael Asbury is an Anglo-Brazilian art historian, art critic and occasional curator. He obtained a Masters Degree in The Study of Contemporary Art (with distinction) from the University of Liverpool in 1996 and a PhD for a study on the work of Hélio Oiticica and his relation to 20th century Brazilian art from the University of the Arts London (UAL) in 2003. He is currently a Reader in the History and Theory of Art at UAL where he is also a founding member of the research centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN) and faculty member at the Camberwell/Chelsea/Wimbledon (CCW) Graduate School, where he runs a PhD study strand on Contemporary Art and Latin America. As an art historian Michael has written extensively on Brazilian modern and contemporary art, as an art critic he has contributed to journals such as Art in America, Art History, Art Nexus, Flash Art, Third Text, as well as Brazilian academic journals such as Arte e Ensaios, Concinnitas, and Porto Arte. He was associate curator for Century City: Art in the Modern Metropolis, Tate Modern’s inaugural temporary exhibition and has since curated over twenty exhibitions both in Brazil and in Europe.
